Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Mix the ingredients until a dough forms. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    Let Dough Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Shaping and Boiling

  1. 5

    Shape Bagels

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and then poke a hole in the center to form a bagel shape.

  2. 6

    Boil Bagels

In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil. Add baking soda and sugar to the boiling water. Drop bagels into the water, 2-3 at a time, and boil for about 1-2 minutes on each side.

Baking

  1. 7

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

  2. 8

    Prepare for Baking

Place boiled bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or coarse sea salt as desired.

  3. 9

    Bake Bagels

Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool on a wire rack before serving.
