Method

Burger

  1. 1

    Form & Season Patty

Divide the 8 oz ground beef into a single patty and gently form a 3/4–1 inch thick round. Do not overwork the meat. Season both sides evenly with 1/2 tsp kosher salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper and 1/4 tsp garlic powder.

  2. 2

    Cook Patty

Heat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat and add 1 tbs olive oil. When shimmering, place the patty and cook 3.5–4 minutes on the first side without pressing. Flip and cook 3 minutes on the second side for medium (adjust ±1 minute for desired doneness).

  3. 3

    Melt Cheese

During the last 1 minute of cooking, place 2 slices provolone over the patty and cover the pan (or close grill lid) to melt the cheese evenly.

Cheese & Toppings

  1. 4

    Prepare Tomato & Greens

While the patty cooks, slice two tomato rounds about 1/4 inch thick and wash/briefly spin the mixed greens dry. Keep them chilled until assembly.

  2. 5

    Cook Mushrooms (if using)

If choosing mushrooms instead of avocado: heat a small skillet over medium heat with 1 tbs butter or oil. Add 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms, season with a pinch of salt and cook 4–5 minutes until browned and any liquid has evaporated. Remove from heat and set aside.

  3. 6

    Prepare Avocado (if using)

If choosing avocado instead of mushrooms: slice 1/2 avocado into thin slices and toss with a small squeeze of lemon to prevent browning. Keep ready for assembly.

Bun & Condiments

  1. 7

    Toast Bun & Spread

Slice the bun and lightly toast cut sides in the skillet or toaster for 1–2 minutes until golden. Spread 1 tbs mayonnaise on the bottom bun and 1 tsp grape preserve lightly on the top bun (the grape note gives a mild sweet-tang that pairs with provolone). If desired, add 1/2 tsp mustard to the mayo or directly to the bun.

  2. 8

    Assemble Burger

Place the provolone-topped patty on the mayo-spread bottom bun. Add tomato slices, mixed greens, and your chosen add-on: avocado slices (arrange to cover the patty) or sautéed mushrooms. Finish with the top bun spread with grape preserve.

Sides & Finish

  1. 9

Plate the burger with 1 cup of potato chips on the side and a lemon wedge. Serve immediately while the burger is hot and cheese is melty.

  2. 10

Optional: offer extra grape preserve, ketchup, or mustard on the side for guests to adjust sweetness and tang.
