Cocktail
- 1
Prepare glass
If you prefer a salted rim, pour the coarse salt onto a small plate. Rub the outer rim of a chilled coupe or rocks glass with a grapefruit twist (cut a small strip of peel). Dip the rim lightly into the salt to coat. Set the glass aside and chill briefly in the freezer while you mix the drink.
- 2
Combine ingredients
In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz reposado tequila, 0.5 oz mezcal, 0.75 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz simple syrup, 0.25 oz agave syrup, 0.25 oz orange liqueur, and 2 dashes orange bitters.
- 3
Shake with ice
Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup) and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds, until the exterior of the shaker is well-chilled and slightly frosted.
- 4
Double-strain and serve
Double-strain the cocktail into the prepared chilled glass (or a rocks glass with fresh large ice cube if preferred) to remove ice shards and any pulp from the lime juice.
- 5
Garnish
Express the oils from the grapefruit twist over the drink by holding it skin-side down and giving it a firm twist over the glass. Run the twist around the rim if you like, then drop it into the cocktail as a garnish.

Notes
Adjust the sweetness to taste by increasing or decreasing the simple or agave syrup. The mezcal float (if you want more smoke) can be increased to 0.75 oz and the reposado reduced accordingly. Serve immediately.
