Soda and Syrup

Garnish and Finish

Method

Prepare Glass

  1. 1

    Choose and chill glass

Select a highball or Collins glass (12–14 oz). If you prefer a colder drink, place the glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while preparing the other components, then discard the water before assembling.

  2. 2

Add about 1 cup of cubed ice to the prepared glass, leaving some headspace (roughly 1 inch) for the cola.

Assemble Drink

  1. 3

    Add grenadine

Pour 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of grenadine gently over the ice. Pouring over the ice helps the syrup to settle and creates the classic gradient look.

  2. 4

    Top with cola

Slowly pour 12 oz (360 ml) of chilled cola into the glass over the back of a spoon or down the side to reduce splashing and preserve the layered effect. Leave about 1/4 inch of headspace.

  3. 5

    Stir (optional)

If you want an evenly sweetened drink, give it one or two gentle stirrings with a bar spoon. For the traditional appearance, leave it unstirred so the grenadine remains mostly at the bottom.

Garnish and Serve

  1. 6

Skewer or drop one maraschino cherry into the drink and rest it on the ice. If using, garnish the rim with the lemon or lime wedge or serve it on the side.

  2. 7

Serve immediately with a straw and optionally an extra cherry on the side.
