Method
Cocktail
Muddle cherries and syrup
Place 2 Luxardo cherries and 0.25 oz simple syrup into a mixing glass or directly in the old fashioned glass. Gently muddle just enough to break up the cherries and release some syrup and flavor — avoid pulverizing the cherries into a paste.
Add bitters and bourbon
Add 3 dashes Watkins orange bitters to the glass with the muddled cherries and syrup. Pour in 2 oz Woodford Reserve Bourbon.
Stir and chill
Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir for about 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted (or if building in the serving glass, add the large ice cube or ice chips and stir gently for 15–20 seconds to integrate flavors).
Strain and serve
If you used a mixing glass, double-strain the cocktail into an old fashioned glass over a single large ice cube (or into the prepared glass with ice). If built in the serving glass, simply leave the drink as is.
Garnish
Express the oils of one orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down above the glass and giving it a sharp twist, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink. Add the remaining Luxardo cherry on a cocktail pick or drop it into the glass.
Glassware & Presentation
Serve immediately on the rocks in an old fashioned glass. Optionally present with a short cocktail pick holding an extra Luxardo cherry across the rim.
