Cocktail
Optional — house-made limoncello (makes ~12 oz)
Method
Cocktail
- 1
Pull the espresso
Pull a fresh single shot of espresso (about 1 oz). Allow it to rest 15–30 seconds so the hottest crema calms but the espresso remains warm — this helps integration when shaken, but avoid letting it cool completely.
- 2
Combine ingredients
In a cocktail shaker, add the espresso, coffee liqueur (0.75 oz), house-made limoncello (0.75 oz), and simple syrup (0.25 oz).
- 3
Add ice and shake
Fill the shaker with 4 large ice cubes. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds. The goal is to chill rapidly, dilute slightly, and produce a light froth from the espresso.
- 4
Double strain and serve
Double-strain the mixture (using the shaker strainer and a fine mesh sieve) into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass (or a rocks glass if preferred). Double straining removes tiny coffee particulates and ensures a silky texture.
- 5
- 6
Serve immediately. The balance should present bright lemon notes up front from the limoncello, a roasted backbone from the espresso and coffee liqueur, and a hint of sweetness from the syrup.
Optional — house-made limoncello
- 7
Zest the lemons
Wash lemons thoroughly and remove only the yellow zest (avoid the bitter white pith) using a microplane or vegetable peeler. Collect about 1 cup packed zest.
- 8
Infuse vodka
Place the lemon zest in a clean jar and pour 12 oz (about 1 1/2 cups) vodka over it. Seal the jar and store in a cool, dark place for 5–10 days, shaking gently once per day. Taste after 5 days; continue until the vodka has a bright lemon aroma and flavor (up to 10 days).
- 9
Combine with syrup
Strain the infused vodka through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove zest. Combine the lemon-infused vodka with 6 oz cooled simple syrup (1:1). Stir to combine, then bottle and chill. Limoncello improves after a few days of rest and will keep refrigerated for several weeks.
