Cocktail
- 1
Brew espresso
Brew a single, fresh shot of espresso (about 1 oz) immediately before mixing. Use an espresso machine if possible; if not available, brew a very strong 1 oz coffee concentrate.
- 2
Chill mixing glass and cocktail glass
Place a martini or coupe glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.
- 3
Combine ingredients
Add ice to a cocktail shaker (about 1 cup). Pour in the vodka (2 oz), coffee liqueur (1 oz), freshly brewed espresso (1 shot), and simple syrup (0.5 oz).
- 4
Shake vigorously
Seal the shaker and shake very hard for 15–25 seconds. Vigorous shaking is important to rapidly chill the drink and create a frothy crema on top from the espresso.
- 5
Prepare glass
Remove the martini/coupe glass from the freezer or discard the ice water and dry the glass.
- 6
Double-strain and serve
Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to catch ice shards and produce a smooth surface with a foamy crema.
- 7
Garnish
Float three coffee beans on the foam as a garnish. Serve immediately.
