Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill Glass

Place a coupe or chilled cocktail glass in the freezer or fill it with ice and water to chill while you prepare the drink (about 2–3 minutes).

  2. 2

    Combine Ingredients

Add 1 oz Scotch, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 1 oz Cherry Heering, and 1 oz freshly squeezed orange juice to a cocktail shaker.

  3. 3

    Add Ice and Shake

Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup), secure the lid, and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until well-chilled and slightly diluted.

  4. 4

    Prepare Glass

If you chilled the glass with ice water, dump it out now. If it was in the freezer, remove it and set aside.

  5. 5

    Strain

Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or cocktail glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to remove shards of ice and pulp for a silky texture.

Garnish & Serve

  1. 6

Express the oils of an orange twist over the surface of the drink by holding the twist skin-side down above the glass and giving it a quick snap, then rub the twist around the rim and drop it into the cocktail. Alternatively, garnish with an orange slice and/or a brandied or maraschino cherry on a pick.

  2. 7

Serve immediately. Sip and enjoy: the Blood and Sand is balanced between smoky Scotch, sweet vermouth, cherry liqueur, and bright orange citrus.
