Turkey Preparation

Basting Mixture

Method

Turkey Preparation

  1. 1

    Preparing the Turkey

Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C). Remove the turkey from its packaging, and remove the neck and giblets from the cavity. Pat the turkey dry with paper towels.

  2. 2

    Seasoning

Rub the turkey all over with salt and black pepper, including inside the cavity.

  3. 3

    Herb Mixture

In a bowl, mix together the olive oil, rosemary, thyme, and minced garlic. Rub this mixture all over the turkey, ensuring to get under the skin where possible.

  4. 4

    Stuffing the Turkey

Place the quartered lemon, onion, carrots, and celery inside the cavity of the turkey.

Roasting the Turkey

  1. 5

    Roasting

Place the turkey breast-side up on a roasting rack in a large roasting pan. Tuck the wing tips under the body.

  2. 6

    Basting

In a separate bowl, mix the melted butter and chicken broth. Baste the turkey with this mixture every 30 minutes throughout the roasting time.

  3. 7

    Cooking Time

Roast the turkey for approximately 13-15 minutes per pound, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) when checked in the thickest part of the thigh.

  4. 8

    Resting

Once done, remove the turkey from the oven and let it rest for at least 20-30 minutes before carving to allow the juices to redistribute.
