Pasta

Topping (optional)

Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring 4 quarts of salted water to a boil.

  2. 2

    Cook Macaroni

Add the elbow macaroni to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions until al dente, about 8-10 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the macaroni in a colander and set aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 4

    Melt Butter

In the same pot used for the pasta, melt the butter over medium heat.

  2. 5

    Create Roux

Once melted, add the flour and whisk continuously for about 1-2 minutes until it is a light golden color.

  3. 6

    Add Milk

Gradually add the milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Continue cooking until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

  4. 7

    Add Cheese

Lower the heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and cream cheese until fully melted and smooth.

  5. 8

    Season Sauce

Season the cheese sauce with salt, black pepper, and paprika, stirring to combine.

Combining Ingredients

  1. 9

    Mix Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until fully coated.

  2. 10

    Prepare Topping (Optional)

If using, mix breadcrumbs and melted butter in a small bowl. Sprinkle over the mac and cheese.

  3. 11

    Bake (Optional)

Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown.
