Method
Cooking Pasta
- 1
Boil Water
In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add a generous amount of salt to the water.
- 2
Cook Penne
Add the penne pasta to the boiling water and cook according to the package instructions until al dente, usually about 10-12 minutes.
- 3
Drain Pasta
Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander but reserve about 1 cup of pasta water for later use.
Making Sauce
- 4
Heat Olive Oil
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
- 5
- 6
Add Spices
Stir in the red chili flakes and cook for an additional 30 seconds to release their flavor.
- 7
Add Tomatoes
Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes. Stir well and bring the mixture to a simmer.
- 8
Season Sauce
Season the sauce with salt and black pepper to taste. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing it to thicken slightly.
Combining Pasta and Sauce
- 9
Combine
Add the drained penne pasta directly into the skillet with the sauce. Toss well to coat the pasta in the sauce.
- 10
Adjust Consistency
If the sauce is too thick, gradually add some reserved pasta water until the desired consistency is reached.
- 11
Add Basil
Tear the fresh basil leaves and mix them into the pasta for added flavor.
- 12
Serve
Plate the penne arrabbiata and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese before serving.
