Method
Burger
- 1
Make burger mixture
In a medium bowl combine 200 g ground beef, 1 tbsp breadcrumbs, 1 tbsp milk, 1 tbsp finely grated onion, 1 tsp salt and 1 tsp black pepper. Mix gently with your hands or a fork until just combined — do not overwork to keep burgers tender.
- 2
Form patties
Divide mixture into two equal portions (about 100 g each). Shape each portion into a slightly wider-than-bun patty, about 1.5 cm thick. Press a slight dimple in the center of each patty to reduce puffing while cooking.
- 3
Cook patties
Heat 1 tsp vegetable oil in a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. When hot, add patties and cook 3–4 minutes on the first side until a brown crust forms. Flip and cook another 3 minutes for a medium doneness (cook up to 4 minutes if you prefer well done). In the last 30–45 seconds of cooking, place one slice of cheddar on each patty and cover the pan briefly to melt the cheese.

Assemble burgers
Spread mayonnaise on the bottom bun and ketchup on the top bun (or as desired). Place a lettuce leaf (optional) on the bottom bun, then the cheeseburger patty, and add pickle slices if using. Close with the top bun.
Fries (Pommes)
- 6
If using frozen fries (easy method)
Preheat oven or air fryer according to package instructions (typically 200°C/400°F for oven). Spread 300 g frozen fries on a baking sheet in a single layer, toss with 1 tbsp vegetable oil, and bake for 18–22 minutes, turning halfway, until golden and crisp. Sprinkle 1 tsp salt immediately after baking.
- 7
If using fresh potatoes
Preheat oven to 220°C (430°F). Cut peeled potatoes into matchsticks, rinse in cold water, and pat very dry. Toss 300 g potatoes with 2 tbsp vegetable oil and a pinch of salt. Spread in a single layer on a baking sheet and roast 25–30 minutes, turning once, until golden and crispy. Season with 1 tsp salt to taste.
- 8
Quick stovetop fries (alternative)
Heat 2–3 tbsp oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add fresh-cut fries in a single layer (may need two batches). Cook undisturbed 3–4 minutes to brown, then stir and continue cooking until tender and crisp, another 6–8 minutes. Drain on paper towel and season with salt.
Serve & Finish
- 9
Arrange the assembled burgers on a kid-friendly plate with a portion of fries. Serve ketchup and mayonnaise on the side for dipping. For safety and kid preference, let burgers cool slightly (2–3 minutes) before serving.
