Method

Country Fried Steak

  1. 1

    Prepare the Breading

In a shallow bowl, mix the flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and eggs.

  2. 2

    Bread the Steaks

Dip each cube steak into the buttermilk mixture, then dredge in the flour mixture, ensuring they are fully coated. Set aside.

  3. 3

    Fry the Steaks

In a large skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, fry the breaded steaks for about 4-5 minutes per side or until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Sawmill Gravy

  1. 4

    Make the Roux

In the same skillet used for the steaks, reduce heat to medium and add 4 tablespoons of flour to the drippings. Stir and cook for 1-2 minutes.

  2. 5

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring no lumps form. Continue stirring until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

  3. 6

    Season the Gravy

Season with salt and black pepper to taste, and keep warm until ready to serve.

Creamy Mashed Potatoes

  1. 7

    Boil the Potatoes

Peel and chop the russet potatoes into even chunks. Boil them in salted water for about 15-20 minutes or until fork-tender.

  2. 8

    Mash the Potatoes

Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Mash until creamy and smooth.

Southern Green Beans

  1. 9

    Prepare the Green Beans

Trim the ends off the fresh green beans and rinse them under cold water.

  2. 10

    Sauté the Green Beans

In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute, then add the green beans. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until tender, seasoning with salt and pepper.

Cheddar Drop Biscuits

  1. 11

    Prepare the Biscuit Dough

Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  2. 12

    Add Cheese and Milk

Stir in shredded cheddar cheese. Pour in milk and stir until just combined.

  3. 13

    Bake the Biscuits

Drop spoonfuls of the dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
