Method
Cake Preparation
- 1
Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- 2
Mix dry ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until well combined.
- 3
- 4
Incorporate boiling water
Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is well combined. The batter will be thin.
- 5
Pour and bake
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- 6
Cool the cakes
Remove from the oven and let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, remove them from the pans and let them cool completely on a wire rack.
Chocolate Ganache Preparation
- 7
Heat the cream
In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it just begins to simmer. Do not let it boil.
- 8
Add chocolate
Remove the saucepan from heat and add the semi-sweet chocolate chips and unsalted butter. Stir until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth.
- 9
Cool ganache
Let the ganache sit at room temperature until it thickens to a spreadable consistency, about 30-60 minutes.
Assembly
- 10
Layer the cake
Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of ganache on top.
- 11
Top with second layer
Place the second layer on top and spread ganache over the top and sides of the cake.
- 12
Decorate (optional)
Decorate with chocolate shavings or sprinkles if desired.
