Method
Basic
Fill a clean glass or pitcher with 4 cups of cold tap water. If you have filtered or bottled water and prefer it, substitute the same quantity.
Taste the water briefly to check temperature and flavor. Adjust as desired (colder, filtered, or sparkling).
Serve immediately or chill in the refrigerator for 30–60 minutes for colder water.
Optional additions
Iced water
Add 6 ice cubes to the glass or pitcher. Stir gently to cool the water evenly. Serve immediately.
Citrus-infused water
Drop 1 slice of lemon or lime into the water. Let it sit 5–10 minutes to lightly infuse, then stir and serve. For a stronger flavor, lightly squeeze the slice into the water before adding it.
Herb-infused water
Bruise 2 fresh mint leaves by gently pressing between your fingers to release oils. Add to the water and let steep for 5–15 minutes, tasting periodically until the desired aroma is reached.
Slightly sweetened water
If you prefer a touch of sweetness, dissolve 1 teaspoon of honey in a small amount (1–2 tbsp) of warm water, then mix into the 4 cups of cold water. Stir until fully incorporated and chill if desired.
Sparkling variation
Replace the 4 cups of still water with 4 cups of chilled sparkling water for a fizzy alternative. Add ice, citrus, or mint as desired following the same instructions above.
