Hot Dogs

Method

Hot Dogs

  1. 1

    Bring water to a simmer

Fill a medium saucepan with enough water to cover the hot dog(s) by about 1 inch (approximately 3/4 to 1 cup per hot dog). Place over medium-high heat and bring to a gentle simmer (not a rolling boil).

  2. 2

    Heat the hot dog

Once the water is simmering, add the 1/4-lb all-beef hot dog. Reduce heat to maintain a gentle simmer and heat for 4 to 6 minutes, turning once halfway through, until heated through (internal temperature about 140°F / 60°C).

  3. 3

    Alternative: Pan-sear or grill (optional)

To pan-sear: heat a nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium-high, add the hot dog and roll/sear for 4–6 minutes until browned on all sides. To grill: preheat grill to medium-high and cook 4–6 minutes, turning to get even char marks.

Bun

  1. 4

If toasting: spread about 1 tsp softened butter lightly inside each split bun. Place buttered side down in a skillet over medium heat or on a griddle and toast 30–60 seconds until light golden and warmed through. Alternatively, warm buns in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5 minutes or microwave for 10–15 seconds.

  2. 5

If not toasting: simply open the bun and warm briefly as desired.

Assembly & Serving

  1. 6

Place the heated all-beef hot dog inside the prepared bun, centered along the split.

  2. 7

If desired, add condiments such as yellow mustard and/or ketchup to taste (about 1 tsp each recommended). Serve immediately while hot.
