Sandwich

Method

Sandwich

  1. 1

    Prepare bacon

Cook the bacon strips until crisp. For best results, bake in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet at 400°F (205°C) for 12–18 minutes, or cook in a skillet over medium heat turning occasionally until crisp. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain and cool.

  2. 2

    Prep roll and toast

Slice the hoagie roll lengthwise, leaving a hinge if desired. Lightly spread the inner cut surfaces with the optional unsalted butter (about 1 tsp total) if you want a richer toast. Toast the roll cut-side down in a preheated skillet over medium heat or under a broiler for 1–2 minutes until golden and slightly crisp. Remove from heat.

  3. 3

    Season tomato

Lay the 3 tomato slices on a plate and sprinkle evenly with about 1/4 tsp salt and a pinch of the black pepper (reserve remainder for final seasoning). This draws out flavor and prevents the sandwich from tasting bland.

  4. 4

    Assemble mayo layer

Spread 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise evenly on the bottom half of the toasted hoagie roll and 1 tablespoon on the top half so both sides have a thin coating.

  5. 5

    Layer turkey and cheese

Place the 6 oz sliced roasted turkey evenly across the bottom half of the roll, arranging it so each bite will have meat. Top the turkey with 2 slices of Monterey Jack cheese, slightly overlapping. If you prefer warm cheese, return the assembled bottom half (turkey + cheese) to the skillet or under the broiler for 20–30 seconds to gently melt the cheese—watch closely to avoid burning the bread.

  6. 6

    Add bacon, lettuce, and tomato

On top of the cheese, lay the 3 crisp bacon strips. Add the 2 green leaf lettuce leaves on top of the bacon, then place the seasoned tomato slices over the lettuce. Sprinkle the remaining pinch of black pepper and remaining 3/4 tsp salt lightly over the tomato if desired (adjust to taste).

  7. 7

    Finish and serve

Close the sandwich with the top half of the hoagie roll, press gently to compact. Using a serrated knife, cut the sandwich in half crosswise if serving one or into thirds for sharing. Serve immediately while the roll is still slightly warm and bacon crisp.
