Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt.

  2. 2

    Cut in Butter

Add the unsalted butter to the flour mixture and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. 3

    Add Egg and Water

Beat the egg and add it to the mixture. Gradually add the cold water, mixing until the dough comes together.

  4. 4

    Chill the Dough

Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Filling Preparation

  1. 5

    Cook the Meat

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.

  2. 6

    Add Vegetables

Add the chopped onion, garlic, and green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook until the onion is translucent.

  3. 7

    Season the Filling

Stir in the sliced olives, cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, then remove from heat and let cool.

Assemble and Bake

  1. 8

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. 9

    Roll Out the Dough

On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/8 inch thick.

  3. 10

    Cut Circles

Use a round cutter (about 4-6 inches in diameter) to cut circles from the dough.

  4. 11

    Fill the Empanadas

Place a spoonful of the filling into the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape and press the edges together to seal.

  5. 12

    Egg Wash

Brush the tops of the empanadas with the beaten egg.

  6. 13

    Bake

Place the empanadas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
