Cooking the Pasta

Boil the Water
In a large pot, bring 4 liters of salted water to a boil.

Cook the Spaghetti
Add the spaghetti to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes.

Drain the Pasta
Once cooked, reserve 1 cup of pasta water, then drain the spaghetti in a colander.
Making the Tomato Sauce

Heat the Oil
In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil and allow it to heat for about 1 minute.

Add the Tomatoes
Pour in the canned whole tomatoes, crushing them gently with a wooden spoon.

Season the Sauce
Add salt, black pepper, and sugar to the sauce. Stir well and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, allowing it to thicken.

Stir in the Basil
Once the sauce has thickened, stir in the fresh basil leaves and remove from heat.
Combining and Serving

Combine Pasta and Sauce
Add the drained spaghetti to the skillet with the tomato sauce. Toss to combine, adding reserved pasta water as needed to reach desired consistency.

Plate the Dish
Serve the spaghetti al pomodoro on plates, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese and additional basil leaves.
