Top-shelf spirits

Method

Build & serve

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a large old-fashioned glass or double old-fashioned (rocks) glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare ingredients to chill.

  2. 2

    Measure spirits

Using a jigger, measure 1 oz each of Grey Goose vodka, Hendrick's gin, Zaya rum, Woodford Reserve bourbon, Glenlivet 12yr scotch, and Don Fulano Blanco tequila into a mixing glass or shaker filled with ice.

  3. 3

    Stir to combine

With a long-handled bar spoon, stir the spirit mixture gently for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted (about 15–20 full spoon turns). This softens the high-proof blend and integrates the flavors.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass

Discard the ice water from the chilled glass (if used) and add one large clear ice cube or several large ice spheres/cubes to the glass.

  5. 5

    Strain & top

Strain the stirred spirit blend from the mixing glass into the prepared glass over the large ice. Top gently with 3 oz premium tonic water (or 3 oz club soda if you prefer a dryer finish). Pour slowly to preserve carbonation.

  6. 6

    Garnish & finish

Express a lemon twist over the drink to release oils (hold twist skin-side down over the glass and give it a firm bend), then drop the twist into the drink as garnish.

  7. 7

    Serve

Serve immediately with a short straw or without — advise the guest to sip slowly to appreciate the layered spirits. Estimated to serve one guest.
