Preparation Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. In a saucepan, heat the milk, water, and butter until warm (about 110°F). Gradually add this mixture to the dry ingredients along with the eggs. Mix until a soft dough forms.

  2. 2

    Knead the Dough

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough into a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.

  3. 3

    Roll and Cut

Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into 2-inch squares or rectangles.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep fryer or large pot, heat the vegetable oil to 375°F.

  5. 5

    Fry the Beignets

Carefully drop the dough pieces into the hot oil, frying a few at a time for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

  6. 6

    Serve

Dust the hot beignets generously with powdered sugar and serve warm with caramel sauce on the side.
