Method

Prep the Ingredients

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Thinly slice the large yellow onion and set aside.

Cook the Burger

  1. 2

    Season the Beef

In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix gently but thoroughly.

  2. 3

    Form the Patty

Shape the seasoned beef into two equal patties, about 1/2 inch thick.

  3. 4

    Cook the Onions

Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook until they are caramelized, about 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  4. 5

    Cook the Burger Patty

In the same skillet, increase the heat to medium-high. Place the burger patties in the skillet and smash them down with a spatula for a nice sear. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side.

  5. 6

    Flip the Patty

Carefully flip the patties and place a slice of American cheese on each patty. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes for medium doneness.

Assemble the Burger

  1. 7

    Toast the Buns

While the burgers finish cooking, toast the white hamburger buns in the skillet for about 1 minute until golden brown.

  2. 8

    Build the Burger

On the bottom half of each bun, place the cooked burger patty with cheese, followed by a generous portion of caramelized onions. Add ketchup and mustard to taste, then top with the other half of the bun.
