For the toast

Method

For the toast

  1. 1

    Prep bread and pan

Bring bread to room temperature if refrigerated. Preheat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat for 1–2 minutes, or preheat a toaster if you prefer toasting that way.

  2. 2

Lightly butter one side of each slice of bread with the unsalted butter. If desired, sprinkle a small pinch of salt into the butter for a faint savory contrast.

  3. 3

Place the buttered-side down in the hot skillet. Cook 2–3 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and crisp. Flip and cook the other side 1–2 minutes until lightly browned. If using a toaster, toast both sides until golden then butter one side immediately.

Nutella spread & toppings

  1. 4

While the toast is hot, spread about 1½ tablespoons of Nutella evenly over each slice. The residual heat will make the Nutella slightly melty and easier to spread; warm Nutella in the microwave for 5–8 seconds if it is very firm.

  2. 5

Arrange banana slices evenly over one or both slices as desired.

  3. 6

Sprinkle chopped toasted hazelnuts over the banana and Nutella for crunch (1 tablespoon total). If you don't have toasted hazelnuts, you can use chopped almonds or omit.

  4. 7

Finish with a very small pinch (about 1/4 tsp) of sea salt flakes scattered lightly across the slices to brighten flavors. Add cacao nibs or chocolate shavings for extra texture and a dusting of powdered sugar if you like a sweeter, decorative finish.

  5. 8

Serve immediately while the toast is warm and Nutella is slightly melty.
