Coffee & Water
Equipment
Method
Prepare Beans & Water
- 1
Measure beans
If using whole beans, measure approximately 2 tablespoons (about 10–12 grams) of coffee beans for every 1 cup (240 ml) of water. This recipe is scaled for 1 cup of brewed coffee.
- 2
Grind beans
Grind the measured beans to a medium grind (similar to granulated sugar) immediately before brewing for best freshness. If using pre-ground coffee, skip this step.
- 3
Heat filtered water to about 195–205°F (90–96°C). If you don't have a thermometer, bring to a boil and let sit 30 seconds.
Brewing
- 4
Set up brewer
Place a filter in your pour-over dripper or the basket of your coffee maker, or prepare your French press. Rinse a paper filter with hot water if using one to remove paper flavor and preheat the equipment and mug. Discard rinse water.
- 5
Add grounds
Add the freshly ground coffee (2 tablespoons) into the filter, dripper, or French press.
- 6
Bloom (pour-over / drip)
If using pour-over or drip: Pour just enough hot water (about 30–40 ml) to wet the grounds evenly and allow them to bloom for 30–45 seconds. This releases trapped gases and improves extraction.
- 7
Continue pouring (pour-over)
After the bloom, slowly pour the remaining water in a circular motion, keeping the water level consistent. Total brew time for pour-over should be about 2.5–3.5 minutes.
- 8
Drip coffee maker
If using an automatic drip coffee maker, pour the measured water into the reservoir and start the machine. Brewing time will vary by machine (typically 4–6 minutes).
- 9
French press method
If using a French press: Pour all the hot water over the grounds, stir gently to ensure saturation, place the lid with the plunger pulled up, and steep for 4 minutes. After 4 minutes, press the plunger down slowly and steadily.
Finish & Serve
- 10
Once brewed, immediately transfer coffee to your cup or a thermal carafe to avoid over-extraction and bitterness from staying on hot plates.
- 11
- 12
Serve hot. Enjoy fresh brewed coffee within 20–30 minutes for best flavor.
