Calamari

Method

Calamari Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Calamari

Rinse the calamari rings under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Mix well.

  3. 3

    Prepare Wet Mixture

In another bowl, whisk together the egg and milk until well combined.

  4. 4

    Coat Calamari

Dip each calamari ring into the wet mixture, then dredge it in the dry mixture until fully coated.

  5. 5

    Heat Oil

In a deep skillet or fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  6. 6

    Fry Calamari

Carefully add the coated calamari rings to the hot oil in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.

  7. 7

    Drain

Remove the fried calamari using a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Marinara Sauce Preparation

  1. 8

    Sauté Onions and Garlic

In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute.

  2. 9

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer.

  3. 10

    Simmer Sauce

Reduce the heat to low and let the marinara sauce simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  4. 11

    Finish with Basil

Remove from heat and stir in the chopped fresh basil.
