Cook, stirring occasionally, for 6–8 minutes until onions are translucent and mushrooms are browned. Season with 1/4 tsp salt and 1/8 tsp black pepper. Remove from skillet and set aside in a small bowl.
Patty

Form the 1/2 lb ground beef into a single patty about 3/4 to 1 inch thick, making a slight indentation in the center with your thumb to prevent doming. Season both sides with 3/4 tsp kosher salt and 1/2 tsp fresh black pepper.

Place the patty in the skillet and cook undisturbed for 4–5 minutes to develop a crust. Flip and cook another 4–5 minutes for medium doneness (adjust time +/- 1–2 minutes for desired doneness).

Buns & Assembly

Split the bun and spread 1/2 tablespoon softened butter on each cut side. Return the skillet to medium heat and toast the buttered bun cut-side down for 1–2 minutes until golden-brown. Remove buns.

Place the top bun and press gently. Let burger rest 1 minute, then serve immediately.
