Method
Base Coffee
- 1
Brew and cool
Brew 2 cups of strong coffee (or make 4 shots of espresso). Let it cool slightly for 5–10 minutes so it’s hot-warm but not boiling. If making an iced Java Chip, refrigerate until cold or use freshly brewed coffee over a few ice cubes to cool immediately.
- 2
In a measuring cup or small pitcher, combine the warm coffee (or espresso) with 1 tsp vanilla extract and 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder. Whisk until the cocoa is fully incorporated and there are no lumps.
Sweeteners & Flavor
- 3
Add 2 tablespoons granulated sugar to the coffee mixture and stir until dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness as desired. If you prefer a smoother dissolve for cold drinks, dissolve the sugar into the warm coffee before chilling.
Chocolate & Texture
- 4
Warm 0.5 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips with 2 tablespoons of milk or cream in a small microwave-safe bowl in 15–20 second bursts, stirring between bursts, until melted and smooth. Alternatively, melt in a small saucepan over low heat. Allow the chocolate to cool slightly but remain pourable.
- 5
Reserve 1 tablespoon of the melted chocolate to swirl inside glasses if desired. Stir the remaining melted chocolate into the coffee + milk mixture until evenly combined. This creates the signature chocolate flecks and flavor of the Java Chip.
- 6
If you want visible chocolate chips in the drink, fold in an additional 2 tablespoons of semi-sweet chips (optional). These will create small chips that you can feel while sipping.
Assembly (Iced Java Chip)
- 7
Fill two tall glasses evenly with ice (about 1 cup ice per glass).
- 8
Divide the chocolate syrup (about 1 tablespoon each) and drizzle inside the glasses; optionally swirl the reserved melted chocolate around the interior of each glass for an extra chocolatey look.
- 9
In a large pitcher or using a blender, combine the cooled coffee-chocolate mixture with 1 cup whole milk and 1/2 cup heavy cream. If you prefer a frothier, more blended texture, blend on medium for 10–15 seconds. For a simpler method, stir vigorously to combine.

Assembly (Hot Java Chip)
- 11
Ice & Garnish
- 12
- 13
Drizzle remaining chocolate syrup over the whipped cream, then sprinkle 2 teaspoons chocolate shavings or extra chips on top for texture and visual appeal.
- 14
Serve immediately with a straw and a long spoon to scoop any chocolate chips. Stir before drinking if chips settle.
