Make demerara syrup
If you don't have demerara or simple syrup, combine 1/4 cup demerara sugar and 1/4 cup hot water in a small jar or container. Stir or shake until the sugar is fully dissolved. Cool to room temperature before using. Yields about 4 tablespoons (0.25 oz per cocktail usage).

Tasting notes
The port adds a plush, fruity sweetness and deep red-fruit notes that complement the whiskey's spice. Adjust port (±0.25 oz) or syrup (±0.25 oz) to taste for a drier or sweeter profile.
