Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare espresso

Brew a single shot (about 1 oz) of espresso using an espresso machine. If you don't have an espresso machine, brew strong coffee with a Moka pot or Aeropress. The espresso should be hot or very warm so it emulsifies with the other ingredients when shaken.

  2. 2

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it.

  3. 3

    Measure and add ingredients

Into a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz vodka, 1 oz hot espresso, 1 oz coffee liqueur, and 0.25 oz simple syrup. The small amount of syrup is optional and can be adjusted to taste (increase to 0.5 oz for a sweeter drink).

  4. 4

    Add ice and shake vigorously

Add about 1 cup of ice to the shaker. Seal and shake vigorously for 15–25 seconds. Vigorous shaking while the espresso is hot/warm creates a glossy, foamy crema on top of the cocktail.

  5. 5

    Strain

Discard the ice or water from the chilled glass. Double-strain the contents of the shaker into the chilled coupe or martini glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to catch small ice chips and ensure a smooth pour.

  6. 6

    Garnish and serve

Garnish with 3 coffee beans placed on the surface of the foam. Serve immediately while the crema is still present.
