Method
Cocktail
- 1
Chill glass
Place a rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill with ice and water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it; discard chilling ice/water before serving.
- 2
Combine
In a mixing glass or stirring vessel, pour 2 oz bourbon or rye, 0.25 oz simple syrup, 3 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters (if using).
- 3
Stir
Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir gently for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full strokes) until well chilled and slightly diluted. The mixture should be very cold and slightly glossy.
- 4
Prepare glass and ice
Discard the chilling ice/water from the rocks glass if used. Place a single large ice cube into the chilled rocks glass.
- 5
Strain
Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, strain the chilled cocktail over the large ice cube in the rocks glass.
- 6
Garnish
Express the oils from an orange twist over the surface by holding the twist skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the drink and giving it a sharp twist so oils spray onto the cocktail. Rub the peel's rim gently on the glass edge and drop the twist into the drink. Add one Luxardo or cocktail cherry on top or on a cocktail pick.
- 7
Serve
Present immediately. Sip slowly to enjoy aroma and balanced flavors.
Simple Syrup (if making at home)
- 8
Combine equal parts granulated sugar and water (for example 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water) in a small saucepan. Heat gently, stirring until the sugar is fully dissolved. Remove from heat and cool. Store in a sealed container refrigerated for up to 2 weeks. Use 0.25 oz per cocktail as listed above.
