Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice and cold water while you prepare the cocktail to thoroughly chill.

  2. 2

Add 2 oz rye whiskey, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes aromatic bitters, and 1 dash orange bitters to a mixing glass or large stirring glass.

  3. 3

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes (about 3–4 cubes). Stir with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full rotations) until the mixture is well chilled, slightly diluted, and satin-smooth. The outside of the mixing glass should feel very cold.

  4. 4

Dump the ice or remove the coupe/martini glass from the freezer and strain the stirred cocktail through a Hawthorne or julep strainer into the chilled glass using a fine mesh strainer if available for extra silkiness.

  5. 5

Drop 1 Luxardo cherry into the drink and let it rest near the bottom of the glass.

Garnish & Finish

  1. 6

Cut a 1-inch strip of orange peel. Hold the peel over the cocktail with the outer skin facing down and give it a firm squeeze to express the oils across the surface; optionally rub the peel around the rim of the glass.

  2. 7

Optional: after expressing, give the peel a quick torch or warm on a hot spoon to slightly caramelize the oils for a deeper aroma, then drop the peel into the drink or rest it on the rim.
