Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it.

  2. 2

    Measure ingredients

Measure 2 oz dry gin, 1/2 oz maraschino liqueur, 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice, and 1/4 oz creme de violette into a chilled mixing glass or cocktail shaker.

  3. 3

Add ice and stir or shake

Add a generous handful of ice to the shaker. The Aviation can be shaken to briskly chill and slightly aerate, which integrates the citrus, or gently stirred if you prefer a silkier texture. Shake vigorously for about 10–15 seconds or stir for 20–30 seconds until well chilled (mixture should feel very cold).

  4. 4

    Strain

Discard the ice or water from your chilled glass. Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or martini glass using a julep or fine strainer to remove any small ice chips and ensure a clear, smooth presentation.

  5. 5

    Garnish and serve

Drop a maraschino cherry into the drink and optionally express a lemon twist over the surface (pinch the twist to release oils) and place it on the rim or float it. Serve immediately.
