Burger Patties

Method

Burger Patties

  1. 1

    Make the mixture

In a medium bowl, combine 0.5 lb ground beef, 2 tbsp fine dry breadcrumbs, 2 tsp milk, 1 egg yolk, 1 tsp salt, and 1 tsp black pepper. Gently mix with your hands or a fork until just combined — do not overwork to keep patties tender.

  2. 2

    Form patties

Divide the mixture into two equal portions. Lightly shape each portion into a round patty about 3–3.5 inches (7–9 cm) wide and roughly 1/2 inch (1.2 cm) thick. Press a shallow dimple in the center of each patty with your thumb to help them cook evenly.

  3. 3

    Cook patties

Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add 1 tsp vegetable oil, swirling to coat. When hot, place the patties in the pan. Cook 3–4 minutes on the first side without pressing. Flip and cook another 2–3 minutes for medium (cook longer if you prefer well done). During the last 30–45 seconds of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty, cover the pan briefly (or use a lid) to melt the cheese.

Buns & Assembly

  1. 4

    Toast buns

While patties cook, spread 1 tsp softened butter on the cut sides of the 2 small hamburger buns. Toast the buns cut-side down in a separate skillet over medium heat or on a griddle for 1–2 minutes until golden and slightly crisp. Remove and keep warm.

  2. 5

    Prepare condiments & produce

Spread 1 tsp mayonnaise on the bottom half of each bun and 1 tbsp ketchup on the top half (split the 2 tbsp between the two buns). Place 1 leaf of lettuce and 1 slice of tomato on each bottom bun.

  3. 6

    Assemble burgers

Place the hot cheese-topped patty onto each prepared bottom bun. Cap with the top bun and press gently. Cut each burger in half if desired to make smaller, kid-friendly portions.

Optional Sides

  1. 7

Prepare 1 cup frozen oven fries according to package directions (usually bake 12–18 minutes at 400°F / 200°C) or serve 1 cup small carrot sticks raw. Arrange apple slices (0.5 cup) on the plate as a fresh fruit option.

Serving & Safety

  1. 8

Serve the kids burgers warm. Ensure beef reaches at least 160°F (71°C) if you prefer fully cooked meat for children. Let hot foods cool slightly to safe eating temperature before serving to young children.
