Bao Buns

Method

Bao Buns Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Dough

In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms.

  2. 2

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  3. 3

    Shape the Buns

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten slightly. Place on parchment paper squares. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.

  4. 4

    Steam the Buns

Fill a steamer pot with water and bring to a boil. Place the buns (on parchment) into the steamer, cover, and steam for about 10-12 minutes until fluffy.

Filling Preparation

  1. 5

    Cook the Ribeye

Season the shaved ribeye with salt and black pepper. In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ribeye for about 5-7 minutes until browned and cooked through.

  2. 6

    Make the Cheese Sauce

In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add milk and bring to a simmer. Gradually whisk in shredded cheddar cheese until smooth. Remove from heat.

  3. 7

    Assemble the Bao Buns

Once the buns are steamed, slice them open carefully. Fill each bun with a portion of the cooked ribeye, drizzle with cheese sauce, and top with crispy fried onions.
