Bread selection
Choose bread
Select the bread you prefer for this serving. The recipe is written for 2 slices of wheat bread by default. If using an English muffin, split into halves (counts as 2 pieces). If using thicker-cut sourdough or artisan loaves, adjust to two slices about 1/2-inch thick.
If using frozen or refrigerated bread that is damp or very cold, let it come to room temperature for 5 minutes or toast a little longer to ensure even browning.
Toasting and finishing
Toast bread
Set your toaster or oven to medium-high (for a toaster, the mid setting; for an oven, preheat broiler or oven to 375°F / 190°C). Place the 2 slices of bread in the toaster and toast until golden and slightly crisp, about 2–3 minutes depending on your appliance. For oven: place slices on a baking sheet and bake 4–6 minutes per side, turning once, until golden.
Apply fat
Immediately after toasting, spread 1 tablespoon unsalted butter evenly over the hot toast so it melts in. Alternatively, brush 1 teaspoon olive oil over both sides for a crisper, dairy-free finish.
Season
Sprinkle a light pinch (about 1/4 teaspoon total) of sea salt and a small grind (about 1/8 teaspoon) of black pepper over buttered or oiled toast if using savory toppings (like avocado).
Jam or sweet topping
For a sweet option, spread 2 teaspoons jam or preserve over one or both slices. Optionally drizzle 1 teaspoon honey over jam or over cream cheese for additional sweetness.
Avocado toast
If using avocado: mash half a ripe avocado with 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice and a pinch of sea salt and spread over the toast. Optionally top with 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes and additional black pepper to taste.
Cream cheese option
Spread 2 tablespoons cream cheese evenly over toast. For a sweet cream-cheese toast, drizzle 1 teaspoon honey over the cream cheese. For savory, top with sliced tomato or smoked salmon (not included in ingredient list).
Serve immediately while still warm and crisp. Toast will soften over time as it cools—eat within a few minutes for best texture.
