Syrup & Prep

Method

Syrup & Prep

1

Make citrus-scented simple syrup

Combine 0.5 cups granulated sugar and 0.5 cups water in a small saucepan. Add the lemon zest and lime zest. Heat gently over medium-low heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Once dissolved, bring to a very gentle simmer for 1 minute to extract the zest oils. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature, covered, about 15–20 minutes. Strain out the zest into a small container. Measure and reserve 0.5 oz of this syrup for the Melon Purée step and set aside 0.25 oz for the cocktail; keep the rest refrigerated for up to 2 weeks.

2

Juice lemons and limes

Juice lemons and limes, then measure 0.5 oz lemon juice and 0.5 oz lime juice for the syrup step (if you prefer more brightness you may use a little extra later). Also reserve 0.5 oz lemon juice and 0.25 oz lime juice for the cocktail as listed in the ingredients.

Melon Purée

3

In a blender or food processor, combine 2 cups cubed seedless summer melon with 0.5 oz of the citrus-scented simple syrup reserved from the Syrup & Prep step. Purée until completely smooth, about 20–30 seconds on high. Taste — the purée should be bright and slightly sweet. If the melon is underripe, add another 0.25 oz syrup. Strain the purée through a fine mesh sieve into a bowl to remove any fiber; you should end up with a silky 1–1.5 oz liquid yield for cocktail use. Chill briefly in fridge if very warm.

Cocktail Build

4

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.

5

Add 2 oz bourbon, 1 oz melon purée, 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.25 oz fresh lime juice, and 0.25 oz reserved simple syrup to the shaker. These quantities create a balanced, bright daisy-style template with bourbon as the base.

6

Dry shake (no ice) for 10 seconds if you prefer extra froth and integration, then add ice and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until the shaker is well chilled. Alternatively, skip the dry shake and shake directly with ice for 12–15 seconds.

7

Strain the cocktail through a fine mesh or Hawthorne strainer into a chilled Collins glass or long rocks glass filled halfway with fresh ice.

8

Top gently with about 2 oz club soda to add effervescence and lighten the drink. Stir once gently with a bar spoon to combine without losing too much fizz.

9

Garnish with a lemon or lime wheel on the rim and float a small melon ball or a thin cucumber ribbon threaded on a pick for an aromatic, summery touch.

10

Serve immediately. Suggestion: for a slightly more herbaceous variation, drop in a mint sprig after the soda is added and slap it briefly between your palms before garnishing to release aromatics.
