Method
Bagels & Spreads
Prepare bagels
Slice each bagel horizontally using a serrated knife so you have two even halves.
Toast or warm
Choose one method: To toaster — place bagel halves cut-side in and toast to medium-dark (about 2–3 minutes) until crisp at the edges and warm inside. To skillet — heat a nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium-high, brush cut sides with olive oil (optional) and toast cut-side down 1–2 minutes until golden. To oven — place on a baking sheet cut-side up at 190°C/375°F for 5–7 minutes. Remove and let cool 30 seconds.
Soften spread
While bagels warm, if cream cheese is very cold, transfer measured cream cheese to a bowl and stir vigorously to make it spreadable (about 30–60 seconds). If desired, stir in the softened butter to create a richer spread.
Spread cream cheese
Using a butter knife or small offset spatula, evenly spread about 3 tablespoons of cream cheese on each toasted bagel half (total 6 tbs). Spread to the outer edge for full coverage.
Toppings & Garnishes
Assemble with smoked salmon (optional)
If using smoked salmon, layer about 40 g (roughly half of the salmon) on top of the cream cheese of each assembled bagel half. Fold slices gently so they sit attractively.
Season & garnish
Sprinkle the chopped fresh dill or chives over the toppings, then add a light pinch of flaky salt (about 1/8 tsp total) and freshly ground black pepper to taste (about 1/4 tsp). If using lemon, squeeze a little lemon juice over the smoked salmon halves for brightness.
Serve
Place the topped bagel halves on a plate, open-faced or sandwich-style. Serve immediately while the bagel is still slightly warm so the cream cheese is smooth and spreadable.
