Measure ingredients
Measure 2 oz rye whiskey and 1 oz Carpano Antica sweet vermouth. Place the measured liquids near your mixing glass.
- 3
Add to mixing glass
Add the rye whiskey, Carpano Antica sweet vermouth and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters into the mixing glass.

- 5
Prepare glass and garnish
Discard ice water from the chilled serving glass if used. Optionally express an orange peel over the glass by holding the peel skin-side down over the glass and giving it a firm squeeze to release oils, then wipe the rim with the peel and discard or drop it in.
- 6
Strain and garnish
Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, strain the chilled Manhattan into the chilled coupe or martini glass. Garnish with 1 maraschino cherry (preferably Luxardo) either dropped into the drink or skewered and rested on the rim.
- 7
Serve
Serve immediately while cold. Optionally note the balance: the rye's spice, the richness of Carpano Antica sweet vermouth, and the aromatic bitters should be harmonious.
