Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Beans

Drain and rinse the canned kidney beans, black beans, and pinto beans. Set aside.

  2. 2

    Chop the Vegetables

Finely chop the onion and bell pepper. Mince the garlic cloves.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Brown the Ground Beef

In a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.

  2. 4

    Sauté the Vegetables

Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, and chopped bell pepper to the pot. Sauté until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.

  3. 5

    Add the Tomatoes and Beans

Stir in the canned diced tomatoes, kidney beans, black beans, and pinto beans. Mix well to combine.

  4. 6

    Season the Chili

Add chili powder, cumin, salt, black pepper, oregano, and cayenne pepper (if using) to the pot. Stir to evenly distribute the spices.

  5. 7

    Simmer the Chili

Reduce heat to low, cover the pot, and let the chili simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. For deeper flavor, simmer for longer if time allows.

Serving

  1. 8

    Serve the Chili

Ladle the chili into bowls, and top with shredded cheddar cheese and chopped green onions. Serve hot.
