Method
Pasta Preparation
- 1
Cook the Pasta
In a large pot of boiling salted water, add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente, about 7-8 minutes. Drain and set aside.
Cheese Sauce Preparation
- 2
Make the Roux
In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Once melted, add the all-purpose flour and whisk constantly for about 2 minutes until the mixture is golden and bubbly.
- 3
Add Milk
Gradually add the milk to the roux while continuing to whisk to prevent lumps. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the mixture thickens.
- 4
Add Cheese
Reduce heat to low, then stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and cream cheese until fully melted and creamy.
- 5
Combine Pasta and Sauce
- 6
Mix Together
Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is fully coated.
Optional Topping
- 7
Prepare Topping
If using, mix bread crumbs and grated parmesan cheese in a small bowl.
- 8
Top and Bake
Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture over the mac-n-cheese. Transfer to a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
