Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Muddle basil and purée

In a cocktail shaker, add 6 fresh basil leaves, 1 oz strawberry purée, 0.5 oz fresh lime juice and 0.25 oz simple syrup. Gently muddle the basil just enough to release aromatic oils — do not pulverize to avoid bitterness.

  2. 2

    Add spirits and ice

Add 2 oz vodka to the shaker, then add enough ice to fill the shaker about two-thirds full (approximately 1 cup).

  3. 3

    Shake

Shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds to chill and integrate the purée and basil.

  4. 4

    Strain over fresh ice

Double-strain (use a Hawthorne and fine mesh strainer if available) into a chilled Collins or highball glass filled with fresh ice.

  5. 5

    Top with kombucha

Slowly top the cocktail with 3 oz kombucha so it retains some effervescence. Give the glass a gentle stir (1–2 turns) to combine.

  6. 6

    Finish with balsamic

Carefully drop 1/4 tsp (a splash) of good-quality balsamic vinegar onto the top of the drink. It will sit briefly on the surface and then disperse slightly—this adds a bright, savory-acidic note.

  7. 7

    Garnish and serve

Garnish with a thin strawberry slice on the rim and a small basil sprig tucked into the glass. Serve immediately.
