Method
Espresso Concentrate
- 1
Brew espresso
Brew 1 cup of very strong espresso (about 2–4 shots per 1/4 cup; use a moka pot, espresso machine, or very strong French press). If you don’t have an espresso method, brew strong coffee and mix with 1/4 cup water to approximate concentrate. Let the espresso cool to room temperature (about 15–20 minutes).
- 2
Punch Base
- 3
Warm and dissolve sugar
In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups whole milk, 1/2 cup heavy cream, and 1/4 cup granulated sugar. Warm over low heat, stirring constantly, just until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is hot but not boiling (about 5 minutes). Remove from heat.
- 4
Stir in 1 tsp vanilla extract and 1/4 tsp freshly grated nutmeg. Let the mixture cool to room temperature (10–15 minutes) so it will not curdle when combined with cold espresso or alcohol.
- 5
If you want a smoother texture, strain the milk mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a bowl to remove any coagulated bits or nutmeg chunks.
Spirits & Aromatics (optional)
- 6
- 7
Add the spirits: 1/2 cup dark rum, 1/4 cup brandy, and 1/4 cup coffee liqueur if using. Stir well to incorporate. Taste and adjust sweetness or alcohol level: add up to 2 tablespoons more sugar dissolved in a little warm water if you prefer it sweeter, or up to 1/4 cup additional rum for more boozy punch.
- 8
If you prefer a non-alcoholic version, omit the spirits and replace with an additional 1/2 cup cooled espresso and 2–4 tablespoons simple syrup to taste.
Finish & Garnish
- 9
Chill and serve
Refrigerate the assembled punch for at least 1 hour to let flavors meld and to chill thoroughly. Alternatively, fill a large punch bowl with ice and pour the mixture over ice to serve immediately (this will dilute slightly).
- 10
When ready to serve, stir the punch, taste and adjust with a pinch of nutmeg or a light dusting of cocoa if desired. Pour into serving glasses over ice.
- 11
Garnish each glass with 1 whole coffee bean and a light sprinkle (about 1/8 tsp) of grated nutmeg or cocoa powder. Serve chilled.
