Base Wine & Sweetener

Sparkle & Finish

Method

Base Wine & Sweetener

  1. 1

    Mix base

Pour 1 liter of your chosen wine (red for Vinho Tinto or white for Vinho Branco) into a large pitcher. Add 60 ml orange liqueur and 60 ml simple syrup. Stir gently to combine.

  2. 2

Taste the wine mixture and adjust sweetness: add up to another 15–30 ml simple syrup if you prefer it sweeter, or a splash more liqueur for orange flavor.

Fruit & Aromatics

  1. 3

    Prepare fruit

Wash the fruit. Thinly slice the orange and half lemon. Core and dice the apple into 1/2-inch cubes. If using strawberries or peaches, slice into bite-sized pieces.

  2. 4

Add all prepared fruit to the wine mixture. Tuck in 1 cinnamon stick for red sangria (omit for white) or add 6 sprigs of fresh mint for white sangria. Stir to submerge the fruit.

  3. 5

Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably 4–12 hours, to allow the fruit to macerate and flavors to meld. For best results refrigerate overnight.

Sparkle & Finish

  1. 6

About 10 minutes before serving, remove the pitcher from the fridge. Add 500 ml chilled club soda or sparkling water and stir gently to combine. This preserves some fizz.

  2. 7

Fill glasses with ice (about 150 g ice per glass). Stir the sangria again, then pour including some fruit into each glass. Garnish with extra orange or lemon slices and (for white sangria) a sprig of mint. Serve immediately.
