Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, salt, sugar, and instant yeast. Whisk together until well mixed.

  2. 2

    Add Wet Ingredients

Warm the milk slightly until it is lukewarm, then add it to the dry ingredients along with the softened butter. Mix until a rough dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    First Rise

Place the kneaded dough into a lightly greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Butter Layer Preparation

  1. 5

    Prepare Butter Block

While the dough is rising, place the cold unsalted butter between two sheets of parchment paper. Use a rolling pin to pound and roll it into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick. Refrigerate until ready to use.

Lamination and Shaping

  1. 6

    Incorporate Butter

Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a large rectangle. Place the cold butter block in the center and fold the dough over the butter, sealing it in.

  2. 7

    First Fold

Roll the dough out into a long rectangle (about 24 inches long). Fold it into thirds like a letter. Wrap it in plastic and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

  3. 8

    Second Fold

Repeat the rolling and folding process two more times, chilling the dough for 30 minutes between each fold.

  4. 9

    Shape Croissants

After the final fold, roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut the dough into triangles. Roll each triangle from the wide end to the tip to form croissants.

  5. 10

    Final Rise

Place the shaped croissants on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 1-2 hours until puffed.

Baking

  1. 11

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) while the croissants are rising.

  2. 12

    Bake Croissants

Once the croissants have risen, bake them in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and flaky.

  3. 13

    Cool and Serve

Remove the croissants from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
