Method

Pasta Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Rigatoni

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the rigatoni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Meat Sauce Preparation

  1. 2

    Sauté the Vegetables

In a large skillet or saucepan, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic. Sauté for about 4-5 minutes, or until the onion is translucent.

  2. 3

    Brown the Meat

Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the skillet. Cook, breaking the meat apart with a spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes.

  3. 4

    Add Tomato Ingredients

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat and let it simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Combine and Bake

  1. 5

    Mix Pasta and Sauce

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked rigatoni with the meat sauce. Stir in the smoked provolone and half of the mozzarella cheese. Mix until well combined.

  2. 6

    Prepare for Baking

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Transfer the rigatoni and meat sauce mixture into a greased baking dish. Top with the remaining mozzarella and the grated Parmesan cheese.

  3. 7

    Bake the Dish

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Garnish and Serve

  1. 8

    Garnish and Serve

Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped fresh basil before serving.
