Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill the glass

Place a coupe or Nick & Nora glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass add the blended Scotch (2 oz), Averna (1/2 oz), dry vermouth (1/2 oz), maraschino liqueur (1/4 oz), orange bitters (2 dashes) and simple syrup (1/4 oz).

  3. 3

    Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes (about 1 cup). Stir gently with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 rotations) until the mixture is well chilled, slightly diluted, and the mixing glass becomes cold to the touch.

  4. 4

    Strain

Discard ice water from the chilled serving glass if you used it. Double-strain (or single fine-strain) the cocktail into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to remove any small ice chips or fruit bits.

Garnish & Serve

  1. 5

    Express and rim

Take a large fresh orange twist. Hold it skin-side down over the surface of the cocktail and give it a firm squeeze to express the oils across the drink. Run the expressed twist lightly around the glass rim for a fragrant edge.

  2. 6

    Finish

Drop the orange twist into the glass or rest it on the rim, then add one Luxardo or brandied cherry on a pick and place it into the drink. Serve immediately.
