Sandwich Assembly

Condiments

Optional (for toasting)

Method

Sandwich Assembly

  1. 1

    Prepare bread

Lay two slices of sandwich bread flat on a clean work surface or plate.

  2. 2

    Spread condiments

On one slice, spread 1 tablespoon mayonnaise evenly to cover the surface. On the other slice, spread 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard evenly.

  3. 3

    Layer ingredients

Place 3 slices of deli ham evenly on top of the mayonnaise-covered slice, overlapping slightly. Add 1 slice of cheddar cheese on top of the ham. Place 1 washed and dried lettuce leaf over the cheese, then top with 2 slices of tomato. Sprinkle the tomato lightly with 1/4 teaspoon black pepper and a pinch of the salt (use remaining salt sparingly).

  4. 4

    Finish sandwich

Place the mustard-coated slice of bread mustard-side down on top of the tomato to form the sandwich. Press down gently to compact the sandwich slightly.

Optional (Toasting)

  1. 5

If you prefer a toasted sandwich, spread 1 teaspoon softened butter on the outside of each bread slice (the outer faces). Heat a skillet over medium heat. Place the sandwich in the skillet and cook 2–3 minutes per side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese begins to melt. Flip carefully with a spatula and toast the other side. Remove and let rest 1 minute before cutting.

Serving and Variations

  1. 6

Cut the sandwich in half diagonally or down the middle as preferred. Serve immediately. Optional variations: swap cheddar for Swiss or provolone, add 1–2 pickle slices, or substitute mustard/mayo amounts to taste.
