Method
Cocktail
- 1
Build & Stir
Add 2 oz Dalmore Scotch, 0.75 oz Amaro Montenegro, 0.5 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, 1 dash orange bitters and 0.25 tsp simple syrup (optional — only if you want slightly more sweetness) into a mixing glass.
- 2
Add Ice
Fill the mixing glass with large, fresh ice (enough to chill and dilute appropriately).
- 3
Stir
Stir gently but thoroughly for 30–45 seconds (about 20–30 full turns) until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted; the glass should feel cold to the touch and some frost may form on the outside.
- 4
Prepare Glass
Place one large ice cube or chilled ice block into a chilled Old Fashioned / rocks glass.
- 5
Garnish & Aroma
- 6
Express Orange Oil
Take a wide strip of orange peel, hold it over the glass skin-side down about 2–3 inches above the surface, and firmly squeeze/express the peel to spray the oils across the cocktail. Rotate the peel as you do so to release more oils.
- 7
Rub & Drop
Rub the expressed peel around the rim of the glass to deposit oils, then drop the peel into the drink as garnish.
- 8
Serve immediately. The Midnight Tartan is best enjoyed slowly to appreciate the layered whisky, bitter herbal notes from Montenegro, and warm spice from the bitters.
