Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Potatoes

Peel and wash the potatoes thoroughly. Grate the potatoes using a box grater or a food processor until you have about 4 cups of shredded potatoes.

  2. 2

    Soak the Potatoes

Place the shredded potatoes in a bowl of cold water. Let them soak for about 10 minutes. This helps to remove excess starch and makes the hashbrowns crispier.

  3. 3

    Drain and Dry

After soaking, drain the potatoes and spread them out on a clean kitchen towel. Pat them dry to remove as much moisture as possible.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot. You can test if the oil is ready by dropping a small piece of potato into it; it should sizzle.

  2. 5

    Cook the Hashbrowns

Carefully add the shredded potatoes to the skillet in an even layer. Do not overcrowd the pan; you may need to cook them in batches. Season with salt, black pepper, and optional garlic powder and paprika.

  3. 6

    Fry Until Golden Brown

Cook the hashbrowns for about 5-7 minutes on one side until they turn golden brown. Flip them carefully using a spatula and cook for another 5-7 minutes on the other side until crispy.

  4. 7

    Add Onion (Optional)

If using onion, add the chopped onion to the skillet in the last few minutes of cooking, allowing it to soften and caramelize slightly.

  5. 8

    Drain and Serve

Once cooked, transfer the hashbrowns to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Serve immediately and enjoy!
