Cake Ingredients

Method

Cake Directions

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, sift together 1.75 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 cups of granulated sugar, 0.75 cups of cocoa powder, 1.5 tsp of baking powder, 1.5 tsp of baking soda, and 1 tsp of salt.

  3. 3

    Add Wet Ingredients

Add 2 eggs, 1 cup of whole milk, 0.5 cups of vegetable oil, and 2 tsp of vanilla extract to the dry mixture. Mix until well combined.

  4. 4

    Incorporate Boiling Water

Carefully stir in 1 cup of boiling water. The batter will be thin; this is normal.

  5. 5

    Bake the Cakes

Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  6. 6

    Cool the Cakes

Once baked, remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then remove them from the pans and transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Frosting Directions

  1. 7

    Make the Frosting

In a medium bowl, beat 1 cup of unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add in 0.5 cups of cocoa powder and mix until combined.

  2. 8

    Add Sugar and Milk

Alternately add 3 cups of powdered sugar and 0.5 cups of whole milk, beating to spreading consistency. Add 1 tsp of vanilla extract and mix until fully incorporated.

  3. 9

    Frost the Cakes

Once the cakes are completely cooled, spread frosting between the layers and over the top and sides of the cake.
